How do I become a Waggies foster carer?

Am I suitable to become a Waggies Foster Carer?

There’s no set formula for what makes a good foster home and, as a result, our foster homes differ considerably. All that we ask is that you have a real passion for dogs and that you meet the minimum requirements required of our Foster Home Assessment.

What does a Foster Home Assessment entail?

All our foster homes are vetted to ensure that they provide a secure, safe and comfortable environment for the dog. Before registering you as a Foster Carer we ask to visit you in your home. This visit will last approximately one hour and will involve us looking around your property and chatting with you about your circumstances, experience, etc. There are some minimum requirements required of foster homes. For example, we would normally prefer that you have a garden that is fully enclosed.

How often will I be asked to look after dogs?

Following your Foster Home Assessment you will be added to our list of Foster Carers. Someone from Waggies will contact you when a suitable foster care placement comes up. Waggies cannot guarantee the frequency of foster care placements. You are not obliged to accept any placement and you can request to be removed from our database at any time.

Will I get paid?

Your services as a Foster Care Provider are on a voluntary basis. However many owners like to make a small voluntary donation to their foster carer for the time and effort associated with caring for their dog. We will ascertain whether the owner is willing to pay this voluntary donation prior to contacting you. However, most owners are more than happy to pay the suggested donation as, even when added to our Waggies administration charge, the total cost is less than the amount charged by many kennels.

How does it all work?

On the day that foster care begins we will collect the dog from its home and bring it to you. We ask the owner to provide all items necessary for caring for their dog including food, bowls, toys, lead, etc. You will also be provided with an information sheet about the dog including details about feeding, exercise, and any necessary medication. The wellbeing of both you and the dog is of utmost concern to us. We provide 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week support for our Foster Carers. We also ask to pay you a visit every couple of days whilst the dog is in your care. This provides us with assurance that the dog is healthy and happy and gives the owner additional peace of mind.
